How do I know if my child is suffering from trauma?
Trauma takes a physical and psychological toll. There is a huge difference in how children experience trauma, interpret, and react to it. The most important thing to remember is that traumatic events leave a long-lasting imprint on the child's psyche. It changes the course of their life if not treated in a timely manner.

For a child, traumatic experiences could be varied. Some of these are:
Moving to a new town or city, parents separating or divorcing, serious illness or death in the family, mental health issues of parents, physical, emotional, and verbal abuse by an adult, and bullying by peers.

My clients have benefited from Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavior Therapy (TF-CBT) which is an evidence-based model for processing childhood trauma. It is effective in significantly improving children’s emotional and behavioral health while reducing PTSD, anxiety, and depressive symptoms. I also use CBT, Play Therapy techniques and art to help children and teens process their experience and alleviate the impact.

Trauma presentation in adults looks a little bit different. Although almost all the symptoms mentioned above remain the same the outcome looks different. The physical effects of trauma are related to significant health issues like diminished function of the immune system or increased risk of blood pressure and heart failure.
